A patrol dog is trained to help the handler in apprehending suspects, detect and locate, through sight sound, and smell, people hiding in buildings or in open areas such as fields or woods, and to alert the handler when they find them. Now those are the basic things a patrol dog is trained to do, however a MWD can be trained on a great number of advanced tactics as long as the MWD has the drive to learn and the training is not to advanced for the dog to comprehend.
